Meadows

A beautiful, low-maintenance alternative to grass — grown from native North Carolina plants that attract bees, hummingbirds, and pollinators.

Meadows are an eco-friendly alternative to grass. They provide beautiful color and textures, require far less water than turf, and are great for filling large portions of vacant areas of your property. We create meadows of all native North Carolina plants grown from seed that will attract bees, hummingbirds, insects, and pollinators.

Ready to replace turf with something beautiful and low-maintenance?

A native meadow is one of the most sustainable choices a Triangle homeowner can make. Once established, native plants have deep root systems that hold soil in place, absorb rainfall that would otherwise run off, and require minimal irrigation even through North Carolina's hot, dry summers. They've evolved here — they thrive without fertilizer, pesticides, or constant mowing.

Coob's Landscaping designs and installs meadows using plant species native to the NC Piedmont. We work with wildflowers, ornamental grasses, and flowering perennials selected to provide color and structure across multiple seasons — not just a brief spring flush. A well-designed meadow looks intentional and beautiful, not neglected.

Benefits of a native meadow over turf grass:

  • Dramatically less water use — especially important during Triangle droughts
  • No mowing required once established (one annual cut is all that's needed)
  • No fertilizer or pesticide inputs
  • Deep roots that reduce erosion and absorb stormwater
  • Habitat for native bees, hummingbirds, butterflies, and beneficial insects
  • Four-season visual interest with blooms, seedheads, and winter structure

Meadows work especially well on larger open areas, slopes that are difficult to mow, areas under shade trees where turf struggles, or properties where the owner simply wants to reduce the maintenance burden of a large lawn. They can be installed as a full yard replacement or as a defined planting area within an otherwise traditional landscape.

Site preparation is key to a successful meadow. We clear existing vegetation, address soil conditions, and seed or plant with an appropriate native mix for your site's sun exposure and moisture levels. Corby walks every property before designing a meadow plan — what works on a sunny, dry slope is different from what will thrive in a low, moist area.
